Feifod a’r Foel

Vivod Mountain and Y Foel, from Glyn Ceiriog

A walk that, after 3 months of the 3rd lockdown, felt like no other!

The day after the First Minister announced a relaxation of the Covid rules, allowing All-Wales travel, was a well-earned chance for us to go a bit further afield. With the expectation that many would head to the honeypots of Eryri (and judging by Instagram, I wasn’t far wrong!) an afternoon on the quiet hills in this corner of Wrexham county seemed like a good idea. I saw just 3 other people all afternoon . A friend who lived close-by tells me that she’s never actually seen anyone else up there, so for the Berwyn, it probably counts as a busy day!

Just half an hour from the car, and at a height of less than 400 metres (as you leave the lanes and head out for the moor) you find that solitude, and a satisfying sense that you’re doing everything under your own steam, rather than just following the footsteps of a hundred others. That quietness, just a stone’s throw from civilisation, is what gives these smaller Berwyn hills around Glyn Ceiriog a unique quality that’s only normally found on higher and more remote hills.

They’re well worth a visit. But don’t all go at once!
