The hills around Llangollen & Llandegla, either side of Bwlch yr Oernant (the Horseshoe pass) form part of the same Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as the Clwydian Range.
And although similar in nature & stature (Moel y Gamelin and Cyrn y Brain are actually higher than any in the Clwydians), they tend to be quieter, so for that reason if no other can feel slightly more remote.
On a typical day on Moel Famau, you might see 100 people.
On Moel Morfydd, you’re unlikely to see more than 5.
For a taster, see ‘Moel Morfydd & Moel y Gaer from Bryneglwys’ below.
Moel Morfydd and Moel y Gaer are two of the four summits on the ridge to the west of Bwlch yr Oernant, the other two being Moel y Gamelin and Moel y Faen. For the more energetic, all four can be tackled from the Ponderosa Cafe at the top of the pass, or from Rhewl in the valley below.

Llantysilio & Eglwyseg – 500 metre hills
- Moel y Gamelin 577 metres
- Cyrn y Brain 565 metres
- Moel Morfydd 550 metres
- Moel y Faen 547 metres
- Eglwyseg Mountain 512 metres
- Moel y Gaer 504 metres

Eglwyseg is a great area for short summer evening walks, with quick access onto the tops from the road that runs below the Panorama from the Sun Trevor pub to Castell Dinas Bran.
Route finding is straightforward if you stay close to the Panorama escarpment, but take care if you’re going well away from there, and onto the open moorland of Eglwyseg mountain, where navigation can get a bit trickier, especially in poor visibility.
