Moel y Cerrig Duon in the Berwyn Mountains of North Wales

The Berwyn mountains are a step up; and a different proposition to the Clwydians & Llantysilio altogether.

Covering a vast area, they stretch from Llangollen to Bala in the west, and over the Powys county border to Llyn Efyrnwy (Lake Vyrnwy) and Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant in the south.

On the ridge that stretches from Moel Sych over Cadair Berwyn to Cadair Bronwen the land rises to over 800 metres, but elsewhere the area is characterised more by vast expanses of heather, rough grass, and blanket bog and unremarkable rounded tops with summits at around 600 metres.

Labelled ‘The Boring Berwyns ‘ by some, they’re nonetheless loved by experienced peak-baggers who revel in their peacefulness, and the challenge of navigating round on paths that, on the less popular routes, are often not much wider than sheep tracks.
